Smith Homers in 7-2 Loss to No. 17 Georgia Tech

ATLANTA – Josh Smith's two-run home run gave Georgia State an early lead, but the Panthers fell 7-2 to No. 17 Georgia Tech Tuesday at the GSU Baseball Complex.
 
The two teams split their annual season series, after the Panthers won 10-1 at Tech on March 3.
 
Smith's homer in the third inning gave Georgia State (10-28) a 2-1 lead. That is his fifth of the season and his third in the last six games, including a grand slam in Sunday's win over Troy last time out.

 
But Georgia Tech (18-14) scored four in the fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead after benefiting from four walks and two balks. The Jackets added two unearned runs in the eighth.
 
The Panthers outhit Tech, 7-6, including two hits each for Griffin Cheney and Kalen Puckett.
 
With the GSU pitching staff already stretched thin after Sunday's 17-15 win, the Panthers used eight pitchers on this staff day. Dylan Matela threw two scoreless, hitless innings, Seth Clark struck out the side in the seventh, and Dalton Davies pitched a scoreless ninth.
 
The game against the 17th-ranked Yellow Jackets was the Panthers' 16th of the season against a ranked opponent, including four wins for Georgia State.
 
Georgia State plays a second midweek game with a trip to Mercer Wednesday at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
