Jones Pitches Complete Game in Loss at South Alabama

First Complete Game by the Panthers Since 2019

SCHEDULE UPDATE: Saturday's scheduled game has been postponed due to inclement weather. The series will conclude with a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 2 p.m. ET.

MOBILE – Georgia State dropped its Sun Belt Conference series opener at South Alabama 4-2 despite a complete game by freshman left-hander Cameron Jones Friday night at Stanky Field.

Jones (0-6) pitched the first complete game for a Panther pitcher since Hunter Gaddis against Louisiana in 2019.

After giving up four runs on four hits in the first three innings, he allowed just one hit the rest of the way and retired the final 11 batters he faced. His final line included four runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

But South Alabama (22-13, 9-4 Sun Belt) starter Miles Smith (3-0) was outstanding, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out 11 in 7.2 innings as the Sun Belt East Division leaders won for the sixth straight time.

Georgia State (10-30, 6-7 Sun Belt) out-hit the Jaguars 6-5, but the only inning in which the Panthers could string together anything was the eighth. After Ashby Smith and Preston Joye led off with back-to-back singles, Griffin Cheney delivered a two-out double to the right field corner to score both runners.

Cheney has gone 11-for-20 at the plate over the last five games.
