Pearson Homers, Drives in Five, But Panthers Fall 12-10

First Career Homer for the Freshman Outfielder

ATLANTA – Freshman Dalton Pearson drove in five runs with a home run and a double, but Coastal Carolina broke a 9-9 tie with three runs in the eighth inning to win 12-10 Sunday at the GSU Baseball Complex.
 
Georgia State (12-34, 7-11) won the Friday game, but the Chanticleers (21-18, 5-7) came back to win the series.
 
Pearson, the right fielder from John's Creek High School, had the best game of his rookie season. He smashed a three-run homer, the first of his career, in the second inning, and then ripped a double down the left field line to drive in two more runs in the third. That capped a 5-run inning and gave the Panthers an 8-6 lead.
 
Coastal Carolina responded with three runs in the top of the fourth to move ahead 9-9, but the Panthers tied the game again in the bottom half as Josh Smith scored on a wild pitch.
 
After 18 runs in the first four innings, the teams were scoreless until the top of the eighth, when Cooper Weiss cleared the bases with a three-run triple to put the Chants up 12-9.
 
Georgia State got one back in the bottom half on Griffin Cheney's solo homer, his fourth of the season, but the Panthers could get no closer.
 
Will Mize had two hits for GSU, including an RBI-double, and Preston Joye drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk.
 
Georgia State returns to action Friday, when the Panthers open a non-conference series at Belmont.
