Shutout! Four Pitchers Blank Little Rock 5-0 on Three Hits

ATLANTA – Four Georgia State pitchers combined for a 3-hit shutout as the Panthers blanked Little Rock 5-0 Friday at the GSU Baseball Complex, evening the series at one game apiece.

Chad Treadway, Tyler Koch, Chandler Dawson and Ryan Watson combined for Georgia State's first shutout since March of 2019, when Hunter Gaddis (now in the Cleveland Indians organization) and current Panther Joseph Brandon pitched a 2-0 win at Appalachian State.

Treadway started and allowed just one hit in three scoreless innings, aided by a pair of double plays by the Panther defense, including a unique 7-3-2 double play in the third. Little Rock (21-27, 11-12 Sun Belt) put runners at first and third with no outs when Tyler Williams hit a sharp line drive to left field. Josh Smith made the catch and threw to first baseman Cameron Jones, who turned and nailed the runner from third at the plate.

Senior left-hander Tyler Koch struck out two in a scoreless fourth, and then Georgia State turned to Chandler Dawson in the fifth. The freshman righty retired seven straight before Little Rock managed back to back singles in the seventh. A wild pitch put runners at second and third, but Dawson got a strikeout and a ground to end the threat.

Dawson (3-2) has allowed just one run in his last eight appearances, covering 20 innings.

Sophomore righty Ryan Watson finished the job by retiring six straight to earn his first save. He struck out the side in the eight and then got the final three outs on just five pitches in the ninth.

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning, when the Panthers (16-36, 11-12 Sun Belt) broke on top with three runs. After Kyle Riesselmann drew a one-out walk and Josh Smith singled, Will Mize smacked single to left field to score Riesselmann, and when the relay throw sailed over the catcher, Mize and Smith moved up to second and third.

That set up Cameron Jones, who delivered a 2-run single to left field to give GSU a 3-0 lead.

The Panthers added two insurance runs in the eighth. With one out, Kalen Puckett and Dalton Pearson had back-to-back singles and moved up to second and third on a double steal. Blaine Marchman hit a ground ball to the third baseman, who threw home, but Puckett slide safely under the tag. Then Preston Joye executed a sacrifice bunt to score Pearson from third for a 5-0 lead.

The regular season concludes with a 1 p.m. game Saturday, when eight GSU seniors will be recognized before the game. Then the Panthers will head to the Sun Belt Championship, which begins Tuesday at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Ala.
