Short-Handed Panthers Drop Sun Belt Opener at Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – Short-handed Georgia State dropped its Sun Belt Conference opener at Coastal Carolina, 75-51, Saturday at the HTC Center.
 
With their top three scorers sidelined, the Panthers (6-7, 0-1) battled to trail by just four points at 45-41 after three quarters before Coastal Carolina (12-2, 2-1 Sun Belt) pulled away in the fourth quarter.
 
Freshman Nyla Jean led Georgia State with 11 points, along with four rebounds and three steals.
 
Moriah Taylor added nine points on three 3-pointers for the Panthers, who were playing for the first time in nearly three weeks. The junior guard has hit 8-of-11 from long range over the last games.
 
Freshman Alex Gitchenko had a season-high seven points with four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
 
The Panthers got off to a slow start and trailed 18-4 after the first quarter but outscored the Chants over the next two quarters, 22-16 in the second and 19-15 in the third to pull as close as three points before Coastal Carolina dominated the fourth quarter.
 
Blayre Shutz led Coastal Carolina with 22 points, while Aja Blount added 19.
