Hudson's Double-Double Leads New Year's Eve Win

ATLANTA -- Ja'Heim Hudson recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds and Dwon Odom also scored 18 to lead Georgia State to a 68-58 Sun Belt Conference victory on New Year's Eve afternoon at the GSU Convocation Center.

The Panthers (8-6, 1-1 Sun Belt) trailed by 13 points late in the first half but turned the tables with an 18-0 scoring run over the final four minutes of the first period and the first three minutes of the second half to improve to 16-4 against South Alabama (6-8, 0-2) since rejoining the Sun Belt in 2013-14.

"South Alabama gave us everything we wanted, but one thing I'm finding out about this team is that we've got some resilient people in our locker room," Jonas Hayes said after his first Sun Belt Conference victory as the Panthers' head coach. "And I couldn't be more proud of the progress--that's going to be a big word this entire year--we've made. I hold our guys to the standard of progress, and what you saw from one game to the next is progress.

"All of these guys, one through 13, are all in different roles," Hayes continued. "There's a different role for everybody, including their head coach, so that takes a while to get used to. What I'm most proud of is the progress we're continuing make. Now, progress is not a linear line, as we all know, but I see progress."

Georgia State fell behind 30-17 with 4:30 in the first half when Hayes called a timeout. His Panthers came out of the timeout by scoring 12 straight points to trail by just one, 30-29, at the intermission. Jamaine Mann and Brenden Tucker had two buckets each on the run, while Hudson and Evan Johnson added two free throws apiece. On the other end, South Alabama missed its final four shots and committed two turnovers during that stretch.

GSU came out of the locker room and continued the run as Hudson opened the second half with a 3-point that gave the Panthers their first lead since it was 2-0.

Hudson nailed another trey on Georgia State's next possession for a 35-30 lead before South Alabama finally scored three minutes into the second half to end the 18-0 run.

Georgia State built a 12-point lead with just under 10 minutes to play, moving ahead 51-39 on a short jumper by Mann. But South Alabama scored the next seven to pull within 51-46 at the 7:51 mark. Hudson stopped the run with a putback for a 53-46 advantage, but the Jaguars scored four straight to cut the GSU lead to 53-50 with 4:51 to play.

Hudson's third 3-pointer of the game gave Georgia State a 58-52 lead, but South Alabama immediately answered with a trey, prompting another timeout by Hayes with 2:51 left. Odom responded with a short jumper, and after a South Alabama miss, Johnson grabbed the defensive rebound for GSU and then hit a mid-range jumper. Odom followed with another bucket to give the Panthers a 64-55 lead with 58 seconds left, and from there, Georgia State sealed the win at the free throw line.

"They went on a little run, but as long as we were getting stops, we were very positive about winning the game," Odom said. "We were able to just stay together, and we defended. That's what we're about."

One game after he was held scoreless against James Madison, Hudson rebounded by hitting 6-of-9 attempts from the field, including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.

Mann (13 points) and Tucker (10 points) also reached double figures for Georgia State, and freshman Edward Nnamoko pulled down seven rebounds, equaling his season high.

After South Alabama scored 30 points in the first 15-and-a-half minutes of the game, the Panthers held them to but 28 the rest of the way. After shooting 43 percent in the first half, the Jaguars were limited to 33 percent in the second half, finishing at 38 percent for the game. Meanwhile Georgia State shot 53.6 percent in the second half to finish at 45 percent for the game. The Panthers also helped their cause by sinking 16-of-18 at the free throw line and committing just eight turnovers.

Georgia State will be on the road next weekend at ULM Thursday at 7:30 p.m. ET and at Louisiana Saturday at 8 p.m. ET, both on ESPN+. The Panthers' next home game is Jan. 12 vs. Troy. For tickets, visit GeorgiaStateSports.com/tix.
