Tucker Scores 25 But Rally Comes Up Short

MONROE, LA. -- Brenden Tucker scored a season-high 25 points, but Georgia State's second-half rally came up just short as the Panthers fell 66-58 at ULM Thursday night at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

Georgia State (8-7, 1-2 Sun Belt) fell behind by 19 points with nine minutes to play and still trailed by 14 at 58-44 with five-and-a-half minutes left when the Panthers reeled off 11 straight points. Tucker nailed a 3-pointer to make it 58-53 with three minutes to play, and then the junior guard grabbed a steal and took it the other way for a layup to pull the Panthers within 58-55 with 2:37 left. But ULM ended the run with a putback, and after a GSU miss, the Warhawks scored again to lead 62-55 with 1:14 to play.

The Panthers made one last run as Jamaine Mann's 3-pointer brought GSU within 62-58 with 19 seconds left, but ULM made four straight free throws in the final seconds to seal the win. The Warhawks (7-9 overall) improved to 3-0 in the Sun Belt to share the conference lead.

"It was a tale of two halves again," head coach Jonas Hayes said. "Defensively, we just didn't give ourselves a chance in the first half. I thought we corrected that for the most part in the second half, but we just came up short. We dug ourselves in hole we could not get out of."

Tucker, the transfer from the College of Charleston, hit six field goals and 10-of-13 at the free throw line while grabbing six rebounds, but he was the only Panther in double figures. Freshman post player Edward Nnamoko contributed four points, six rebounds and three blocks.

Georgia State trailed 36-37 at the half after managing just 5-of-19 from the field and committing 10 turnovers in the first half while allowing ULM to connect on 15-of-35 (43 percent).

Free throw shooting helped GSU stay in the game as the Panthers hit 20-of-23 from the line.

Georgia State continues its road trip Saturday at Louisiana in an 8 p.m. ET tipoff on ESPN+.
