ATLANTA-In fitting fashion, the final game in the GSU Sports Arena proved to be an instant classic as Georgia State earned a 65-58 come-from-behind win over rival Louisiana on Friday night.
Following 49 years in the GSU Sports Arena, Georgia State (15-10, 9-5 Sun Belt) will move into its new convocation center next season. In what might go down as one of the top games in the history of the arena, the Panthers came from as many as 11 down in the second half and outscored Louisiana (13-14, 8-9 Sun Belt) 41-23 in the final 20 minutes.
The Panthers won for the seventh-straight time and ninth time in the last 10 games. Georgia State will be no worse than the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Championship in Pensacola starting next Saturday.
Although it was the seniors who were honored before the game, it was junior
Jalen Thomas who led the Panthers with 16 points and eight rebounds, just missing his third double-double of the season.
Senior
Kane Williams finished with 14 points and five assists, while fellow senior
Corey Allen added 11 points.
Eliel Nsoseme added eight points and seven rebounds, while
Justin Roberts added six points and six assists, finishing the regular season just two points shy of 1,000 for his career in GSU uniform.
Louisiana was led by Greg Williams Jr., who came off the bench to score 18 points, while Jalen Dalcourt scored 11 points.
Trailing 54-53 with 3:12 to play, Georgia State outscored Louisiana 12-4 going 10-for-10 at the free throw line down the stretch to secure the win.
Williams knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to give Georgia State an early 6-4 lead, but unfortunately Louisiana would take over for most of the rest of the first half.
A 10-0 run by the Ragin' Cajuns gave Louisiana a 17-8 lead with just under 12 minutes to play. Louisiana pushed the lead to 28-15 with just over five minutes to play as Georgia State went scoreless for nearly five minutes before a Nsoseme lay-up.
Louisiana went into the locker room with a 35-24 lead after shooting 56.5 percent before the break, while holding the Panthers to just 30.3 percent from the floor.
However the script flipped int the second half as Georgia State held Louisiana to just 31.0 percent shooting and 0-9 from 3-point range.
Louisiana continued to lead by as many as 11 with 17:13 to play before the Panthers started to mount the comeback. A 9-0 run by Georgia State capped by a lay-up and made free throw by Allen cut the Ragin' Cajuns lead to just 47-46 with 8:30 to play.
