Softball Splits Pair with Appalachian State

ATLANTA – The Georgia State softball team split a doubleheader with Appalachian State on Saturday in the home opening games of Sun Belt Conference play for the Panthers.

Pounding out three home runs in the second game, Georgia State (11-17, 2-3 Sun Belt) managed a split with Appalachian State (14-9, 3-2 Sun Belt) after the Mountaineers took the first game of the series.

In the opener, the Mountaineers used a nine-run second inning to take Game 1 11-0. In the second game, the Panthers took advantage of four App State errors and the long ball en route to a 6-2 win.

The two teams will meet in the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Game 1: Appalachian State 11, Georgia State 0
Appalachian State had one big inning scoring nine runs in the second inning en route to an 11-0 win over Georgia State in five innings in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.

The Mountaineers got on the board quickly with a home run by Emily Parrott in the first, but it was the nine runs given up in the second inning that led to the run-rule victory.

Delani Buckner (6-2) scored the shutout win going all 5.0 innings while allowing just two hits.

Starter Hallie Adams (2-5) took the loss after going 1.0 inning and despite allowing just one hit, gave up three runs.

Emily Brown went 2-for-2 to lead Georgia State.

McKenzie McCullen led the Mountaineers going 1-for-2 with four RBI. Parrott finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Game 2: Georgia State 6, Appalachian State 2
Georgia State belted three home runs and took advantage of four Appalachian State errors to earn a 6-2 victory over the Mountaineers in the second game of the series.

The Panthers got on the board first in the bottom of the second when Jackie Gonzalez stole third and then advanced home on an error by the Appalachian State catcher.

Georgia State went ahead 2-0 on a Bailee Richardson home run to left in the bottom of the third. It was Richardson's team-leading ninth home run of the season.

After Appalachian State got one back in the top of the fourth, Georgia State struck for a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Chloe Middlebrooks scored on a sac bunt by Mallory Fletcher. Gabby Benson followed with a single to left scoring Jaycee Goodwin.

In the bottom of the fifth, Sofie Mooney scored on a throwing error by the catcher as she was trying to throw out Daisy Hess on a stolen base attempt.

The Mountaineers cut the deficit to 5-2 on a home run by Emma Jones in the top of the sixth, but the Panthers got it right back in the bottom of the sixth on a Skylar Chavez home run to left.

Mooney (2-4) pitched a complete game allowing just three hits and two runs while striking out six over 7.0 innings.

Taylor Nichols (3-3) took the loss for Appalachian State after going 4.0 innings, allowing six hits and four runs.
