Ryerson Homers Twice in 10-8 Win Over South Alabama

ATLANTA -- Max Ryerson hit two home runs and Griffin Cheney also homered to lead Georgia State to a 10-8 victory over South Alabama in the opening game of their Sun Belt Conference series Friday at the GSU Baseball Complex.

Ryerson and Cheney rank 1-2 in the Sun Belt in home runs as Ryerson now has 10 and Cheney nine.

The Georgia State (16-10, 5-2 Sun Belt) bullpen keyed the victory by pitching seven innings and allowing just one earned run while striking out 10.

Seth Clark (2-0) earned the win as he pitched four innings and allowed just one run while tying his career-high with seven strikeouts.

Ryan Watson picked up his fourth save as he pitched the final three innings and gave up just two hits and no earned runs. Watson's save is the seventh of his career, moving him into a tie for seventh place in GSU history.

"What a gutsy performance by our relievers Seth Clark and Ryan Watson," head coach Brad Stromdahl said. "Max Ryerson and Griffin Cheney came up with some huge homers. Just a great team win!"

The Panthers trailed 5-2 before scoring four runs in the fifth inning. Luke Boynton delivered an RBI-single, and then Ryerson hit a 3-run homer to give Georgia State a 6-5 that they would not surrendur.

Cheney hit a two-run homer in the sixth to extend the the lead to 8-5.

After South Alabama (16-8, 4-3) added a run to pull within 8-6, Ryerson hit his second homer of the game and his Sun Belt-leading 10th of the season with a solo shot in the seventh inning. Catcher Kyle Hilton added an RBI-double for a 10-6 lead after seven innings.

South Alabama managed two unearned runs in the ninth for the final 10-8 margin.
