Strong Pitching Keys Series-Clinching 4-3 Win over South Alabama

ATLANTA -- Georgia State starter Chandler Dawson pitched six strong innings and relievers Nick Lommen and Chad Treadway finished the job as the Panthers clinched their Sun Belt Conference series against South Alabama with a 4-3 win Saturday at the GSU Baseball Complex.

The Panthers (17-10, 6-2 Sun Belt) jumped in front with four runs in the first inning, and the pitching staff made that lead hold up.

Dawson (2-2), the sophomore right-hander from Warner Robins, Ga., pitched a career-long six innings and allowed three runs but only two earned on seven hits. He struck out one and walked just one.

Lommen, the sophomore lefty, came on to pitch the seventh with GSU holding a 4-3 lead. He allowed a double to South Alabama's top hitter Miles Simington but struck out two in a scoreless inning.

Treadway finished the game with two scoreless innings to earn his second save. After he allowed a leadoff single in the eighth, the Panthers turned a nifty double play as second baseman DeAngelo Abboud fielded a chopper up the middle behind second base and made a backhand flip to shortstop Griffin Cheney, who turned the double play.

In the bottom of the first, Abboud drew a leadoff walk, moved to third on an errant pickoff throw by South Alabama starter Matt Boswell (4-2) and scored on Cameron Jones' double down the right field line. After Luke Boynton singled to put runners at first and third, Caleb Stewart hit a ball down the third base line that bounced off the bag for a single, scoring Jones.

After Max Ryerson was hit by a pitch, Dalton Pearson's fly ball dropped into shallow center for a single to score one, and and errant throw to third base allowed the fourth run to score for a 4-0 lead.

Boynton and Ryerson each had two of the Panthers' eight hits.

Georgia State will go for the series sweep Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will air on ESPN+.
