Panthers Drop Close Battles Day One of Panther Invitational

ATLANTA - Day one of the Panther Invitational, and Coach Terry Hutchinson's debut, was highlighted by senior Julianna Truscott's 27 kills, 20 of them coming in a single match.
 
The Panthers opened the regular season and day one of the Panther Invitational with a match against Marist. Despite Laura Ehieze hitting .417 and Julianna Truscott tacking on 7 kills, the Panthers fell to the Red Foxes in three close sets: 25-21, 25-23, and 25-21. The Panthers looked good on defense as well with Livy Kowalkowski picking up 23 digs. Ehieze, Truscott and Izzy Durnell were strong at the net with six blocks between the trio. Sophomore setter, Jenna Brown dished out 17 assists and three aces in the match. Despite leading in both the second and third sets, the Panthers could not close.
 
The Panthers looked to bounce back in their 7 p.m. matchup against the Auburn Tigers. Outside Hitter, Erin Wyatt, got the Panthers off to a great start against Auburn with a kill on the second play of the game. Laughlin Murray served up two aces, and the Panthers took an early lead. Once the Panthers took the lead at 6-5, after a block by Durnell and Kayla Broom, they did not relinquish it. The Panthers got off to a slower start in the second set, but an ace by Wyatt ignited the Panthers to close the 9-14 gap. A Truscott kill tied the set at 15 a piece, however the Panthers eventually dropped the second set 26-24. On defense the block was huge, especially in the third set as Wyatt, Broom, Ehieze, and Durnell contributed to eight total blocks, with 14 total in the entire match. Libero, Kowalkowski also led the Panthers in digs in the night match with 19.
 
The highlight of the Panthers' offense was senior right side, Julianna Truscott, who seemed to have found every open hole on the court, hitting a career-high 20 kills. The outside hitters proved to be all-around threats as both Evoni Lemons and Erin Wyatt earned double-doubles. Dishing it out to the hitters all night, setter Jenna Brown logged a career-high 35 assists, while Laughlin Murray also logged 17 herself.
 
The Panthers took the Tigers to extra points in both the third (30-28) and the fourth (26-24) sets, but once again could not close. The Panthers are back in action tomorrow, Aug 27 at 2 p.m. against the Belmont Bruins for day two of the Panther Invitational.
