Panthers Drop Sun Belt Game at Old Dominion

NORFOLK, VA. -- Georgia State fell at Old Dominion 70-58 Thursday at Chartway Arena.

One game after scoring 100 points and shooting a season-high 63.8 percent, the Panthers struggled offensively, managing just 35 percent from the field, including 7-for-23 from 3-point range.

Evan Johnson led the Panthers (9-10, 2-5 Sun Belt) with 15 points. Ja'Heim Hudson and Brenden Tucker scored 12 points each, while Hudson pulled down eight rebounds.

The fourth Panther in double figures was Collin Moore, who scored 10 points in his first game of the season after missing the last several months due to injury.

"We've got to get him in game shape, but he did some good things tonight, and he's going to be a good player for us," head coach Jonas Hayes said of Moore.

Georgia State fell behind 33-16 late in the first half before closing the period with eight straight points. Kalik Brooks hit a 3-pointer, Moore had a putback and Johnson nailed a trey with just one second left to send the Panthers into the locker room down 33-25.

But the Monarchs opened the second half with an 11-4 run to move ahead 44-29 in the first five minutes. The lead grew to 19 with 10 minutes to play, and the Panthers could never get it back to single digits.

"We're still maturing on the road and learning how to do with adversity," Hayes said. "I thought for the most part our guys played hard, but we didn't play smart. As I've said before, progress is not linear, so it's a few steps forward and a few steps back."

Tyreek Scott-Grayson led Old Dominion (11-8, 3-4) with 24 points and Chaunce Jenkins added 21.

Georgia State will head straight to Georgia Southern for a 3 p.m. game Saturday at Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro. The game will air on ESPN+.
