Hynek Grand Slam, Pitching Lead 13-3 Win over Mercer

ATLANTA -- Colin Hynek hit a grand slam and Georgia State pitchers Camren Landry, Davis Chastain and Zach Ottinger combined on a two-hitter as Georgia State routed Mercer 13-3 in a seven-inning, run-rule victory Wednesday at the GSU Baseball Complex.

Max Ryerson and Dalton Pearson also homered for the Panthers (19-19).

Both of Mercer's hits came in the second inning, including a 3-run homer by Carter Sanford that gave the Bears (24-14) a 3-1 lead, but GSU didn't allow a hit or run the rest of the way.

Landry (2-3), the junior right-hander, started and pitched 4.1 innings. He allowed two hits and three runs, all unearned. The freshman Chastain came on in the fifth with runners and first and third and got out of the jam, then pitched a 1-2-3 sixth. Ottinger loaded the bases in the seventh before ending the game with a strikeout.

Pearson, the junior outfielder, hit a solo homer in the bottom of the second inning to pull the Panthers within 3-2.

Matt Ruiz led off the fourth for GSU with a single, stole second, advanced to third on an error and then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3. After Hynek walked, Ryerson belted his 10th homer of the season for a 5-3 lead.

Pearson drove in another run in the fifth with a sacrifice bunt to extend the GSU lead to 6-3.

Then the Panthers broke the game open with seven runs in the sixth. Ryerson singled, Will Mize walked and JoJo Jackson singled to load the bases with one out. Cameron Jones delivered his second RBI-single of the night, and Ruiz singled home another run for an 8-3 lead.

Another run scored on a balk, and then Pearson walked to load the bases again.

That brought Hynek to the plate, and he hit the 1-1 pitch over the left field fence for his seventh homer of the season. Georgia State has now 76 homers on the season, including four grand slams.

Hynek's grand slam also made the margin 10, invoking the run rule after seven innings. The redshirt freshman from Rockmart, Ga., also threw out two runners attempting to steal. Landry picked off a third runner.

Georgia State hits the road for a key Sun Belt Conference series at South Alabama, beginning Friday at 7:30 p.m.
