Acosta's Strong Start, HRs by Jackson, Ruiz Not Enough in 5-4 Loss

Senior Rafael Acosta turned in a strong start and JoJo Jackson and Matt Ruiz homered, but Georgia State came up just short in a 5-4 loss to top-seed and No. 7 ranked Coastal Carolina on Day 2 of the Guardian Credit Union Sun Belt Conference Championship Wednesday at Riverwalk Stadium.

Eighth-seeded Georgia State (30-28) falls into the loser's bracket and will play an elimination game Thursday at 1:30 p.m. ET against the loser of tonight's game between No. 4 Louisiana and No. 5 Texas State.

Acosta, the fifth-year senior from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, gave the Panthers 6.2 innings. He allowed five runs and struck out five.

"We fell short against a great team, but we really competed," head coach Brad Stromdahl said. "We had a great outing from Rafael Acosta, but their guy did an unbelievable job keeping us at bay.

"Rafael keeps getting better and better. What more do want than a guy to go out there and give it everything he possibly has and give his team a chance to win."

Acosta was the victim of bad luck in the first inning, when he appeared to have an inning-ending strikeout of Nick Lucky, but the borderline pitch was called ball four to load the bases. The next batter, Zach Beach, hit a 3-run double to give Coastal Carolina a 3-1 lead.

GSU first baseman Luke Boynton gave the Panthers the lead in the top of the first inning with an RBI double to score Max Ryerson, who singled.

But Coastal (38-17) starter Liam Doyle was outstanding, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out seven in six innings to leave with a 4-1 lead.

Jackson, the sophomore left fielder, greeted reliever Darin Horn with a solo home run to lead off the seventh inning to make it 4-2. Jackson homered for the second straight day, hitting his 13th of the season.

Then Colin Hynek singled and Jesse Donohoe doubled to put runners at second and third with no outs, and Dalton Pearson delivered with a sacrifice fly to pull the Panthers within 4-3.

After the Chanticleers added a run in the bottom of the seventh, Georgia State answered with Ruiz's solo homer over the railroad tracks in left field, again making it a one-run game.

Ruiz's homer is his 10th of the season, the sixth Panther to reach double digits this season. Georgia State ranks in the top 10 in the nation with 109 homers.

But Coastal Carolina reliever Teddy Sharkey, the first-team All-Sun Belt relief pitcher, closed the door.
