JACKSONVILLE, AL --Nick McMullen totaled 14 rebounds, but the Georgia State men's basketball team fell to the Jacksonville State Gamecocks 72-67 on the road Wednesday.
McMullen added five points and 14 rebounds for the Panthers (1-2). Malachi Brown helped out with 15 points, four assists, and two steals, and Zarique Nutter chipped in with 17 points and six rebounds.
Clash Peters pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace the Georgia State offense, which grabbed 10 offensive boards and turned them into four second-chance points.
The Georgia State defense held Jacksonville State shooters to just 40 percent from the field, including 25.9 percent from three-point range.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 33-31 advantage, Georgia State went on an 8-0 run with 3:16 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Toneari Lane, to increase its lead to 41-31, a score that would hold until halftime. Georgia State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down seven shots to account for 21 of its 41 points.
Georgia State kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Nutter's layup, to grow the lead to 57-46 with 10:29 to go in the contest. Jacksonville State then asserted control, outscoring the Panthers 26-10 the rest of the way to hand Georgia State the 72-67 loss. Georgia State got out on the break, scoring 11 fast break points.
