MOBILE -- Georgia State swept a doubleheader at South Alabama, 10-7 and 11-1 (8), Saturday to complete a series sweep on the opening Sun Belt Conference weekend in Mobile, Ala.
The Panthers (11-9, 3-0 Sun Belt) hit five homers on the day, and
Will Mize collected four hits and five RBI.
GAME 1: Georgia State 10, South Alabama 7
Georgia State scored seven runs in the fifth inning to rally from a 7-1 deficit and down South Alabama 10-7 in the first game of a doubleheader at Stanky Field.
Trailing 7-1 after four innings, GSU sent 12 men to the plate in the fifth with the first eight reaching base safely.
Maximus Martin started the scoring with an RBI single.
Will Mize drove in a run with an error on a ground ball, another run scored on passed ball, and then
Brennan Hudson drew a bases-loaded walk to pull the Panthers within 7-5.
Jesse Donohoe tied the game with a 2-run single, and then
Michael Maginnis put the Panthers ahead 8-7 with an RBI on a fielder's choice.
The score remained 8-7 until
Taylor Shultz delivered two insurance runs with a 2-run single in the ninth.
After Georgia State took the lead in the top of the fifth,
Davis Chastain and
Brian Garmon II finished the game with five scoreless innings. Chastain allowed just one hit in the fifth and sixth innings, while Garmon pitched the final three to earn the save. Freshman Sam Schofield (2-1) earned the victory in relief of starter
Tyler Roche.
GAME 2: Georgia State 11, South Alabama 1
Baley Coleman pitched seven strong innings in his first start for Georgia State and the Panthers hit five home runs to down South Alabama 11-1 (8) in the second game of a doubleheader, completing the series sweep.
Coleman, the graduate transfer from LaGrange College, pitched seven innings and allowed just one run on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
Aidan McEvoy and
Trent Reddick combined to pitch a scoreless eighth inning to complete the run-rule victory. The GSU staff held South Alabama to six hits while striking out four and walking just one.
Matt Ruiz,
Ryan Dyal,
Brennan Hudson,
Michael Maginnis and
Jae Williams all homered for the Panthers.
Ruiz gave Georgia State the early lead with a solo homer in the first inning. GSU added three more in third on Mize's RBI single, a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk drawn by
Jesse Donohoe.
In the fifth inning, the Panthers hit three solo homers by Dyal, Hudson and Williams to extend their lead to 7-0.
Georgia State closed out the scoring in the eighth on a 2-run homer by Maginnis and a 2-run double by
Will Mize.
