ATLANTA -- Georgia State fell 6-4 to Georgia Tech Tuesday at the GSU Baseball Complex as the Yellow Jackets rallied with three runs in the top of the ninth.
After four scoreless innings, Georgia State (11-10) scored the game's first runs on
Michael Maginnis' 2-run homer, his fourth of the season, in the fifth inning. The Panthers added a run on a wild pitch, and then
Will Mize delivered a run-scoring single for a 4-0 lead after five innings.
Georgia Tech (16-4) answered with three runs in the sixth, and Georgia State took that 4-3 into the ninth inning. Drew Burress, on the nation's top hitters, was hitless up to that point, but he tied the game with one-out RBI-double. Then Matthew Ellis hit a 2-run homer to give Tech the lead.
Former Panther Cam Jones pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save for Tech.
GSU starter
Dylan Matela, making his first start after missing the 2023 season due to injury, pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four. Reliever
Aidan McEvoy contributed two scoreless innings with three strikeouts out of the bullpen.
Georgia State continues its homestand by hosting ULM for a Sun Belt Conference weekend series, beginning Friday at 6 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex.
