JACKSONVILLE, ALA -- Georgia State jumped in front with six runs in the first inning, and reliever
Davis Chastain struck out seven of the final nine batters to seal the Panthers' 8-5 victory at Jacksonville State Wednesday afternoon.
Chastain came on with bases loaded and no outs in the seventh inning and proceeded to strike out the side on just 10 pitches, preserving the Panthers' 8-5 lead. In the eighth, Chastain retired the Gamecocks on just six pitches with a pair of groundouts and a 3-pitch strikeout. Then he stuck out the side again in the ninth to record his second save of the season.Â
The sophomore right-hander from Rome, Ga. (Model High School) needed just 33 pitches to record three hitless, scoreless innings with seven strikeouts.
Will Mize went 4-for-4 and
Michael Maginnis had two hits and two RBI to lead the Panthers (16-16) at the plate.
Georgia State wasted no time, scoring six runs in the first inning. After
Maximus Martin walked and scored on an error, Maginnis,
Jesse Donohoe,
Ryan Dyal,
Jae Williams and Martin delivered run-scoring singles as the Panthers sent 10 men to plate to take a 6-0 lead.
Maginnis drove in another run in the second with a groundout, and Martin led off the fourth inning with a triple and scored on a wild pitch to put the Panthers up 8-1.
Georgia State used six pitchers before Chastain covered the final three. Brian Garmon (1-2) pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning and was credited with the victory.
The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed to Wednesday due to rain.
After playing five straight road games, Georgia State returns home to host Southern Miss in a Sun Belt Conference series that opens Friday at 6 p.m.
