CONWAY, S.C. -- Georgia State hit six home runs, including two each by
Will Mize and
Matt Ruiz, but the Panthers fell 17-14 at Coastal Carolina in the series opener, which concluded Saturday at Springs Brooks Stadium after being suspended Friday night due to inclement weather.
Mize, the senior third baseman, had two homers and a double to extend his hitting streak to 19 games, equalling the fifth-longest streak in program history and three off the school record of 22.
Ruiz, the senior center fielder, hit a 2-run homer in the first inning and a solo homer in the ninth, giving him seven home runs in the last six games.
Brennan Hudson and
JoJo Jackson also homered for the Panthers (23-27, 12-14 Sun Belt).Â
Georgia State led 8-5 after three innings, but Coastal Carolina (29-20, 12-13) scored seven runs in the fourth inning, taking th lead on a grand slam by Ty Dooly. The Chanticleers hit four homers in the game.
The series concludes with a doubleheader Sunday beginning at noon.
