Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Panthers Top Mountaineers on the Road

BOONEMikyla Tolivert tallied a double-double and Eghosa Obasuyi scored 11 points as Georgia State topped Appalachian State 62-55 at the Holmes Center on Saturday afternoon.

Tolivert led Georgia State with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting and grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds to record her sixth career double-double.  The senior from Melbourne, Florida also recorded four assists with three steals, and came up with a crucial block with 1:08 left to help the Panthers seal the win.

Obasuyi heated up in the fourth quarter, knocking down all three of her three-point attempts to score nine of her 11 points in the period.  The sophomore from Villa Rica, Georgia shot a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor with one rebound.

Mahogany Matthews tallied five blocks to bring her season-total to 62.  The graduate student from York, Pa. entered the game ranked first in the Sun Belt in total blocks (4th Nationally) and blocks-per-game (2.71, 7th Nationally), and is 15 blocks away from equaling the GSU single-season record of 77 set by Cody Paulk in 2012-13.

Georgia State (11-11, 5-6 Sun Belt) trailed 53-52 in the fourth quarter when Obasuyi drained a deep three-pointer to put the Panthers up 55-53 with 2:20 left.  Appalachian State (12-9, 8-3 Sun Belt) tied the game 18 seconds later on a jumper by Rylan Moffitt, but the Panthers responded with a layup by Tolivert to go back up 57-55 with 1:43 remaining.

The Mountaineers had a chance to take the lead with 1:08 left, but Mikyla Tolivert blocked a potential go-ahead three by Mara Neira, forcing a shot-clock violation.

GSU was able to bleed 38 seconds off the clock before Crystal Henderson drove all the way to the basket for a layup with 29 seconds left.  The Panthers then got tow more stops on two missed Mountaineer free-throws and a missed three-pointer before Kaleigh Addie sealed the game with a fast-break lay-up with a foul to increase GSU's lead to 62-55 with eight seconds left.

Georgia State will travel to Jonesboro, Arkansas to face the Arkansas State Red Wolves on Wednesday, February 5 at 12 p.m.  The Panthers will return home to the GSU Convocation Center on Saturday, February 8 when they host Eastern Michigan for the SBC-MAC Challenge at 2 p.m.  For tickets, visit georgiastatesports.com/tix
