Matthews Breaks, Ties Block Records in Double-OT Victory

Mahogany Matthews recorded 11 blocks to tie the GSU single-game record and break the single-season record

ATLANTA – Mahogany Matthews recorded 11 blocks to tie the GSU single-game record and break the single-season record in Georgia State's 78-69 double-overtime victory over South Alabama at the GSU Convocation Center.

Matthews' 11 blocks equaled the Georgia State (13-12, 6-7 Sun Belt) single-game record set by Marcquitta Head on December 3, 2006 against Hofstra, and brings her season-total to 80, surpassing the previous record of 77 set by Cody Paulk in 2012-13.

The graduate student from York, Pa. also helped GSU come away with two crucial stops to keep the game tied and force overtime.  The first came with the score tied at 61 with six seconds left in the fourth quarter when she contested and forced a missed go-ahead layup by Rachel Leggett to force overtime.  The second came with the game still tied one second left in the first overtime when she rejected Leggett again with her ninth block of the game to set the GSU single-season record before tallying two more blocks in the second overtime and equal the single-game record.

On the offensive end, Mikyla Tolivert led GSU with an equally impressive performance, scoring 26 points while five assists while recording five rebounds, five steals and two blocks on the defensive end.  Kaleigh Addie scored 19 points on 6-of-14 shooting and 3-of-7 from three, and Patience Williams led GSU with a team-high seven rebounds.

The victory gave GSU head coach Gene Hill his 100th career victory, and came with a GSU Women's Basketball record crowd of 2,849 in attendance.  Hill now has 88 victories in his seven seasons at GSU, which is tied for second all-time among GSU head coaches.

The game featured seven lead changes and was tied eight times before the Panthers opened the second overtime with a 7-0 run to pull away for good.

GSU trailed 55-50 with 6:11 left in the fourth when Addie banked-in a long three and Crystal Henderson tied the game with a layup with 4:34 left.  Both teams would then exchange layups before back-to-back baskets by Mikyla Tolivert put the Panthers ahead 61-57 with 2:02 left before South Alabama (5-19, 1-12 Sun Belt) scored four straight points, setting up both overtime periods.

Rachel Leggett secured a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Jaguars.

Georgia State will host Appalachian State in the second game of a doubleheader at the GSU Convocation Center on Friday, February 15, following the conclusion of the men's basketball game against the Mountaineers.  Tip-off is at 5 p.m.
