Hamilton Leads Panthers with 24 Points in Victory Over Old Dominion

NORFOLK, VA -- Jelani Hamltion led the Panthers with 24 points to defeat Old Dominion 76-70 on the road Saturday. 

The Georgia State men's basketball team got a 24-point showing from the bench on the way to a 2-0 record against Old Dominon this season.

The Panthers (13-16, 8-8) had three players score in double figures, led by Jelani Hamilton, who had 24 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Zarique Nutter added 18 points and two blocks off the bench and Cesare Edwards helped out with 13 points and two blocks.

Georgia State out-rebounded Old Dominion 45-44 in Saturday's game, paced by 10 boards from Nick McMullen. The Panthers also grabbed 14 offensive rebounds and scored 18 second chance points.

The Georgia State defense held Old Dominion shooters to just 34.1 percent from the field. The Panthers also kept Robert Davis Jr. to 5-of-19 shooting in the game.


How It Happened

After jumping out to a 22-20 advantage, Georgia State went on a 6-0 run with 7:39 left in the first half to increase its lead to 28-20. The Panthers then maintained that lead and entered halftime with a 43-35 advantage. Georgia State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 43 points.

Old Dominion proceeded to take a 63-62 lead before Georgia State went on a 6-0 run, finished off by McMullen's layup, to seize a 68-63 lead with 1:52 to go in the contest. The Panthers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 76-70 win. Georgia State took care of business in the paint, recording 24 of its 33 points in the lane.
