Big Games from Henderson and Tolivert not Enough in Georgia State's 80-74 Loss to JMU

HARRISONBURG, VA --Crystal Henderson scored 25 points and Mikyla Tolivert added 23, but the Georgia State women's basketball team fell to the JMU Dukes 80-74 on the road Wednesday.

The Panthers (14-15, 7-10) had three players score in double figures, led by Henderson, who had 25 points. Tolivert added 23 points, eight rebounds and three steals and Kaleigh Addie helped out with 10 points.

The Georgia State offense made hay from three-point land, making eight threes on 25 attempts. Henderson hit three treys for the Panthers in the contest.

The Georgia State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Wednesday's game, forcing 16 JMU turnovers while committing nine. Those takeaways turned into 22 points on the other end of the floor. Tolivert's three steals led the way individually for the Panthers.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 5-2 advantage, Georgia State went on a 5-0 run with 7:17 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Tolivert, to increase its lead to 10-2. The Panthers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 16-13 advantage. Georgia State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 16 points.

The Panthers could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 31-28.

Georgia State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Panthers faced a 55-47 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Georgia State played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 19 points in the paint.

JMU kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 58-47 advantage before Georgia State went on an 11-0 run, finished off by Tolivert's jumper, to even the score at 58 all with 7:14 to go in the contest. The Panthers could not turn their rally into a victory, as the Dukes outscored them 22-16 the rest of the way to hand Georgia State the 80-74 loss. Georgia State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 27 points.
