Atlanta, G.A. – Seven innings of scoreless baseball from starting pitcher
Ross Norman lifted the Panthers to a 3-0 game two victory over the South Alabama Jaguars and their fifth series win in as many weekends to open the season.
With Norman cruising early, the Georgia State offense got some run support on the board in the third inning. After drawing a walk to open the frame,
Jae Williams moved to second on a
Kaleb Freeman single and third on a failed pickoff attempt. With the game's first run 90 feet away,
Michael Maginnis sent a single up the middle to give his team an early lead.
Leading off in the bottom of the fourth,
Andon Lewis launched the second pitch he saw over the left field wall at a speed of 108 miles per hour. The solo shot put the Panthers out in front 2-0.
After a single and a fielding error put runners on the corners with two outs for South Alabama, Norman got a mound visit from the coaching staff. The starter remained in the game and generated the inning ending out thanks to a diving stop from first baseman Wills Maginnis. Norman finished the day with eight strikeouts over seven innings of shutout pitching, his best outing of the year.
Jacob Crews entered the game in the eighth inning in relief of Norman. Despite walking a batter in each the eighth and ninth innings, Crews faced the minimum. The Panthers infield turned two inning-ending double plays to get reliever his second save, Norman his third win, and the team their first nine-inning shutout of the season.
The Panthers will return to the GSU Baseball Complex in search of their third series sweep when they take on South Alabama at 1:00 p.m.
