Panthers Sweep Jaguars; Off to Best Start since 2011

ATLANTA – Jesse Donohoe hit two of Georgia State's four home runs and GSU held off a late rally to win 15-14 and complete their sweep of South Alabama at the GSU Baseball Complex on Sunday afternoon.

The win gave Georgia State (15-6, 3-0 Sun Belt) their fourth straight sweep to open conference play.  At 15-6, they are off to their best 21-game start since 2011 when current head coach Brad Stromdahl was an assistant on the staff.

"It was a great weekend. We had the close game, we had the game that could have gone either way, and we had the game that we kind of took control of on Friday. Just really happy for our guys, really happy for our pitching staff. I think it's a great way to start off conference, and looking forward to going to West Georgia on Tuesday," said Stromdahl on the sweep to open Sun Belt play.

A senior infielder, Donohoe hit a two-run home run to tie the game in the fifth inning and a solo shot in the sixth.  The Columbus, Ga. native went 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI's and one walk.

Kaleb Freeman went 2-for-3 with three walks and three RBI's.  Both of his hits came in the fifth on a leadoff solo home run and a double later in the inning.

Carter Bailey also tallied two hits, including a grand slam that gave GSU crucial insurance in the eighth inning.

Andon Lewis went 2-for-4 with one walk, John Beverley drew three walks, and William Maginnis drew one walk and three hit-by-pitches, including one each in the fifth and sixth that came on the first pitch he faced immediately after Donohoe's home runs.

GSU scored 15 runs on nine hits and drew 12 combined walks by nine South Alabama (10-9, 0-3 Sun Belt) pitchers.

Down 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Kaleb Freeman led off the inning with his solo homer, and then after a double by Michael Maginnis and a popout by Carter Bailey, Donohoe tied the game with the first of his two-home runs; a no-doubter that traveled 108 mph off his bat 412 feet over the wall in right field.

Former Panther Brian Garmon (1-2) then came on to pitch, and GSU would capitalize on his inability to find the strike zone as they drew two walks on two hit by pitches and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch to chase the right-hander from Cumming, Ga.  Then, after another pitching change following Jae Williams' strikeout, Freeman came to the plate again and smacked a bases-loaded double to right field that scored two more runs to make it 8-5 GSU.  The Panthers then made it 10-5 in the next inning with two runs on two hits, including Donohoe's second homer of the day.

Both teams scored one run each in the seventh, and then South Alabama scored three runs on two hits in the top of the eighth to pull within two, but GSU responded in the bottom of the inning with Bailey's grand slam to make it 15-9 Panthers.

South Alabama made things interesting in the ninth when they batted around the lineup without the benefit of a hit, scoring five runs on eight walks, including four runs on seven straight walks, to pull within one.  But Tysen Benford shut the door with a scoreless inning, inducing a popout to second base on a 3-2 count to end the game to earn his third save (second of the weekend, and GSU's third straight).

Cole Roberts (3-1) battled through a rough start that saw him allow nine runs, six earned, on 10 hits with five walks to earn the win with eight strikeouts in 7.2 innings.

Brennan Holt went 4-for-5, including two home runs, and Robert Miranda went 3-for-4 with four RBI's to lead South Alabama at the plate.

Georgia State will travel to Carrollton, Ga. to face West Georgia on Tuesday, March 18 at 6 p.m.
