Late Rally Comes Up Short in Loss at South Alabama

MOBILE, AL -- Georgia State came up just short in a tightly contested Sun Belt matchup Saturday night, falling 69–67 to South Alabama at the Mitchell Center.

Georgia State had a chance to win in the final seconds, but a potential game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer did not fall as the Panthers dropped a two-point road decision in a game that featured 16 lead changes and nine ties.

Malachi Brown led all scorers with 21 points, knocking down seven three-pointers on 7-of-16 shooting from deep while also pulling down nine rebounds. Jelani Hamilton added 12 points, six assists, and five rebounds, while Trey Scott III chipped in 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting.

The Panthers shot 15-of-42 from three-point range, accounting for the majority of their scoring as they stayed within striking distance throughout the night. Georgia State also held a 37–33 rebounding advantage and scored 16 second-chance points.

Georgia State trailed 36–33 at halftime before opening the second half with strong perimeter shooting to keep the game close. Brown and Hamilton connected on multiple three-pointers late, including a fast-break three by Brown with 18 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to one.

South Alabama answered at the free-throw line in the closing moments, and Hamilton's final look from beyond the arc came up short as time expired.

The Panthers move to 9–14 overall and 6–5 in Sun Belt Conference play.
