Softball Run-Rules Redbirds for First Win of 2020

Mooney struck out 12 batters and Ray drove in four runs.

TAMPA, Fla. -- Georgia State's softball team earned its first win of 2020 Saturday with a six-inning run-rule victory over Illinois State, defeating the Redbirds 10-2.

Freshman Sophie Mooney got the start in the circle for GSU and was lights out. Mooney struck out 12 batters and held Illinois State to two runs through six innings of work.

At the plate, Caitlin Ray did much of the damage for the Panthers. Ray drove in four runs with a perfect 3-for-3 night. She doubled home a pair of runs in what was a big, five-run fourth inning for GSU.

The Panthers and Redbirds each scored a run in the first inning. GSU took a 3-1 lead in the third before jumping out to an 8-1 lead in the fourth. Illinois State scored again in the fifth but Georgia State pushed across two more runs in the sixth to go up by eight and end the contest.

Sydney Stavro continued her hot weekend with two hits and three runs scored. Baylee Sexton also scored three times. Olivia Davis and Daisy Hess each had two hits as well.

Due the how late the games started at the USF-Rawlings Invite, GSU's contest against USF was canceled. The Panthers will next face #7/#9 Florida Sunday at noon.
