NORFOLK –
Kaleigh Addie scored 20 points and Georgia State held off a furious fourth quarter rally from Old Dominion to win 66-62 at Cartway Arena on Wednesday night.
Addie shot 7-of-12 from the field and 3-of-7 from three with six rebounds to reach 20-plus points for the second time this season. Her performance was fueled by a strong second quarter that saw the junior from Atlanta, Ga. shoot a perfect 5-for-5 and 2-for-2 from three in the period.
Crystal Henderson scored 12 points with seven rebounds, and
Mikyla Tolivert scored 10 points, including three free throws late in the fourth to help GSU pull ahead for good, along with six rebounds.
Mahogany Matthews tallied five blocks to bring her season total to a team-high 57. The graduate student from York, Pa. entered the contest ranked first in the Sun Belt for total blocks (6
th Nationally) and blocks-per-game (7
th Nationally)
Georgia State (10-11, 4-6 Sun Belt) led 57-51 in the fourth when a jumper by
Mikyla Tolivert increased their lead to 59-51. The score remained that way until 7:41 left when
Kaleigh Addie nailed a three-pointer to increase Georgia State's lead to 62-51, but from there, the Panther offense struggled, failing to make a field goal for the remainder of the game.
Old Dominion (14-8, 6-4 Sun Belt) capitalized with an 11-0 run over the next 5:11 to tie the game 62-62 with 2:31 left. Thirty seconds later, GSU would regain the lead for good when an intentional foul put
Mikyla Tolivert at the free throw line, and the sophomore from Melbourne, Fla. made 1-of-2 free throws to put the Panthers up 63-62.
The Monarchs had a chance to take the lead after a steal by En'Dya Buford, but couldn't convert on two attempts.
Kaleigh Addie came away with a crucial defensive rebound with 57 seconds left, and then Tolivert hit two more free throws after drawing a shooting foul with 30 seconds left to increase the Panther lead to 65-62. Simaru Fields would then miss a three-pointer five seconds later, and GSU ran off 17 seconds before
Patience Williams made 1-of-2 free throws to seal the game.
GSU shot an impressive 10-of-13 in the second quarter including nine straight field goals to end the period and led 41-39 at halftime.
ODU led 51-49 with 3:01 left in the third quarter when the Panthers went on an 8-0 run to close out the period, setting up the frantic fourth quarter finish.
The Panthers will travel to Boone, North Carolina to face Appalachian State on Saturday, February 1 at 3:30 p.m.
